Whitechapel Women Walking Tour

Remember their lives, not their ends…

🙋‍♀️ Did you know, there is a surprising portion of east London tourism centred around the 1880s murderer, Jack the Ripper, or rather…the ‘unidentified murderer’? This includes walking tours visiting murder sites, showing graphic photos; dehumanising the women involved for entertainment.

In 2017, women’s charity Beyond the Streets joined with local activists to produce the first tour to challenge this dominant narrative.

The charity now offers regular walking tours on the last Thursday of every month at 6:30pm from Aldgate, telling an alternative history of events in Whitechapel; humanising these resilient women.

Why take the tour?

✅ Changes the narrative by looking at the women’s lives instead of their deaths and glorifying violence.

✅ Raises awareness about the lives of women today who face similar disadvantages and stigma.

✅ Empowering ideas for how to keep the conversation going about ending violence against women and girls.

✅ Led by volunteers for the charity with first hand experience of supporting women who sell sex.

✅ All the money from donations goes to support women today.
