The incident occurred at Gatwick Airport on Sunday, April 26, where the swarm settled near a gate, resulting in a six-hour closure.
Specialist help was called in from the Reigate Beekeepers Association and Gerry James, who was on site for several hours, adding that Gatwick calls him around four or five times a year.
Mr James told My London: “It’s very exciting.
“You are under pressure until you finish because you know the gate is out of action.”
He explained that once his beekeeping equipment had cleared security, he used a nuc box, a portable mini-hive, to safely relocate the bees.
He added: “Gatwick is to be congratulated for what they do with the bees.
“They are very concerned about nature.”
Thankfully, no flights had to be cancelled or delayed.
A spokesperson for Gatwick Airport said it was “very grateful to our local beekeeping community.”
