These are the best places to celebrate Oktoberfest in south London this autumn

Originally held in Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival and folk celebration.

Despite its name, the event traditionally begins in September and runs into October, attracting millions of visitors each year.

From a huge festival on Clapham Common to brewery takeovers in North Greenwich and pub celebrations in Sidcup, here’s our guide to the Oktoberfest events still to come in south London.

Oktoberfest on the Common, Clapham

When: Friday, October 9 to Saturday, October 24

Oktoberfest on the Common is returning to Clapham Common for what organisers say will be its biggest celebration yet.

Billed as the UK’s biggest outdoor Oktoberfest, the event will feature nine sessions across six days and three weekends.

Visitors can enjoy authentic German beer from Munich’s Paulaner brewery, alongside beers from Jubel and Sambrook’s Brewery. Live oompah bands, DJs, crowd games, fairground rides, axe throwing, keg tapping and a large Oktoberfest dancefloor will also be on offer.

Food options include bratwurst sausages, pretzels, schnitzel, frikadellen pork burgers and Bavarian potato dishes, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options available.

Organisers have also unveiled a new immersive stage, upgraded sound system, additional food vendors and an improved table service experience for this year’s event.

The Dial, North Greenwich

The Dial, home of Meantime Brewery, is running one of the longest Oktoberfest celebrations in south London.

The month-long German-themed takeover features German-inspired beers brewed on site, giant pretzels, bratwurst and a range of Bavarian food specials.

Visitors can drop in throughout October and enjoy the brewery’s take on the famous German festival without the need for an entry ticket.

George Staples is hosting its annual SKINToberfest celebration with German beer promotions, pretzels, themed decorations and music from DJ Dan Scott.

The event promises a lively Oktoberfest atmosphere and will run until the early hours of the morning.
